SPANISH CIVIL WAR WARGAME

Here are some photos from a Spanish Civil War game we played yesterday. The game invoved an infantry assault by Nationalists on a ridge defended by dug in Republicans. The aircraft played a minor role in the game but looked so cool I thought I should share the images with you. The aircraft models are die-cast metal and 1/72 scale. They were on stands but Photoshop magic removed those.

LATEST PLASTIC ACW CAVALRY - REBS

Here are the latest plastic ACW cavalrymen I have done. I had a couple of figures and horses left over after I had done the US cavalry and decided to do some Rebs. I cut the sabers away as they were seldom actually worn by cavalry, especially Reb cavalry, and used a couple of the Perry separate metal cast heads you can get. These are really nice heads, full of character. I then gave each man a full length rifled musket as I have a lot of these spare on Zulu sprues. Reb cavalry would grab hold of anything they could and often used long arms if that was all that they could get. They'd cut them down if they could, but these two guys haven't had time to do that yet. I am really pleased with the finished product. The final two photos are of the other plastic Reb cavalry I have done so far.

I just have to mention the outstanding service from Perry Miniatures. I put my order in on 11 September and had it in my hands here in Australia on 17 September. That is an amazing turnaround from the UK. Hats off to Perrys a great crowd to deal with!

PLASTIC 28mm UNION CAVALRY BATTALION

Here is my finished Union cavalry battalion. The figures are all Perry plastic 28mm. I now need to paint the dismounted versions of these fellows. I will use Perry metal dismounted Union cavalry for the rank and file and Sash and Saber metal minis for the command group.

28MM PLASTIC ACW REB CAVALRY

Here is the first of the 28mm Perry's plastic Confederate cavalry figures I have done. This one is an officer. I added the beard. The raised arm comes from the spares box and is not from the original kit.

ANOTHER 28mm PLASTIC ACW CAVALRYMAN

Another plastic Perry ACW Union cavalryman - this time an officer. The raised arm is a spare from a set of Zombies but it does the job nicely.

AUSTRALIAN WAR MEMORIAL OPEN DAY

Here as a digression from model figures but well worth seeing are some photos from a special public open day of the Australian War Memorial (AWM) here in Canberra. The AWM is one of the world's premier modern military history museums and held an open day today as part of the centenary of Canberra celebrations. While the collection inside the AWM is outstanding and open to the public all year round it is rare for smaller items to be placed outdoors which is what occurred today. Many other military interested groups apart from the AWM participated and the displays they put on were excellent. Of particular note was the WW1 re-enactment group who did a great job. Here are some photos for your interest and also maybe to inspire some model making and painting of minis.

A display of absolutely beautiful 1/72 scale models of Australian warships from various eras. These are all hand made by dedicated enthusiasts and are amazingly detailed.

One group brought along their large scale radio controlled model tanks and ran displays using them.

This was an absolute treasure. A Japanese tank, knocked out and captured at the battle of Milne Bay in New Guinea in 1942 and fully restored.

A 106mm Recoiless Rifle mounted on a Land Rover from the era of the Vietnam War and 1970s.

A present day Bushmaster MPV used extensively by the Australian army in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A delightful model T truck painted up in the 1918 colors of the AIF's 2nd Division.

 A big old 9.2" Howitzer

 A WW1 18pdr with a crew of Diggers (WW1 re-enactment group)

A WW2 German Henschel Hs 296 guided missile.

 A WW2 German Fritz X guided missile.

You can't have an open day without a helicopter landing. Here an RAN chopper comes in to land.

A Russian ZSU-23 AAA captured in Afghanistan in 2006.

WW1 re-enactment group marches past led by a piper.

The same group lined up for inspection.

 Officer and Sergeant.
